Helping Your Child Build Speech and Language Skills Through Playful Reading

Purpose / Skills Addressed

  • Expands vocabulary and pronunciation

  • Improves speech sound production

  • Keeps your child engaged and focused during reading

  • Builds comprehension

Supplies Needed

  • A children’s book with colorful illustrations and simple text

  • Your voice and some imagination!

Instructions

1) Pick a book your child likes.

Choose one with characters, animals, or objects that make fun sounds (like “meow” for a cat or “vroom” for a car).

2) Read and act it out.

As you read, slow down and make the sound effects for things in the story. Use different voices, change your pitch, and make it fun.

3) Encourage your child to join in.

When a sound or word comes up again, pause and let your child try it. If they don’t say it right away, just model it again and give them another chance.

4) Ask simple questions

While reading, you can say things like, “What animal is this?” or “What sound does the train make?” to get them talking more.

5) Repeat for practice

Doing this practice and reading the same book a few times during the week helps your child remember the sounds and words better.

Tips for Parents:

  • Praise your child for trying, even if the sound or word isn’t perfect.

  • Use exaggerated facial expressions and body movements. It keeps your child engaged and adds visual cues.

  • Your child is going to be more motivated to join in when it’s their favorite story, so let them pick the book sometimes.
